Visa Reason Code 11.3: No Authorization/Late Presentment
Category AuthorizationBy Payment Defender Editorial TeamUpdated July 17, 2026Last reviewed July 17, 2026
What Visa Reason Code 11.3 Means
Visa reason code 11.3 applies when a transaction was completed without obtaining required authorization, or when a transaction was presented for settlement outside the required timeframe. This condition also carries the context previously handled under the retired Condition 12.1 (Late Presentment), which applied to transactions completed through April 12, 2024.
Why This Chargeback Happens
This dispute commonly occurs when authorization was not obtained for a transaction that required it, or when the transaction was submitted for clearing after the allowed presentment window, sometimes because the account was closed or unavailable by the time of settlement.
What the Cardholder or Issuer Is Claiming
The issuer claims that required authorization was missing or that the transaction was presented too late, so it should not be honored.
What Merchants Should Review
Review whether authorization was obtained, the transaction date versus the settlement date, the presentment timeframe, and any processing delays between authorization and clearing.
Recommended Chargeback Evidence
- Authorization records showing an approval was obtained
- Transaction and settlement dates demonstrating timely presentment
- Documentation explaining any delay between authorization and clearing
How to Prevent Similar Disputes
These disputes may be reduced by obtaining authorization for all transactions and submitting transactions for settlement promptly and within Visa's presentment windows.
Important Limitations
This page is educational and reflects common industry usage. Visa retired Condition 12.1 (Late Presentment) for transactions after April 12, 2024, and its context is reflected here. Timeframes and rules change over time; merchants should confirm current requirements with their acquirer or processor.
