Rapid Dispute Resolution
Quick Definition
Verifi’s Visa pre-dispute service that applies merchant-defined decisioning to eligible disputes and can resolve them before chargeback initiation.
Also Known As RDR, Verifi RDR, Visa Rapid Dispute Resolution
What Rapid Dispute Resolution Means
Rapid Dispute Resolution is a Visa pre-dispute service offered through Verifi that lets merchants resolve eligible disputes automatically, according to rules they set in advance, before those disputes escalate into chargebacks. Where a traditional dispute flows from the cardholder's issuer into the formal chargeback process, RDR introduces a decision point earlier in that flow — one the merchant can pre-configure rather than handle case by case.
The service works on eligibility. Not every dispute qualifies, and the disputes that do are evaluated against the merchant's configured logic. When a case is eligible and matches the merchant's rules, RDR can close it out — usually by returning the transaction amount to the cardholder — so the dispute never reaches the chargeback stage. That distinction matters: a resolved pre-dispute avoids the chargeback fee and keeps the event out of the counts that drive network monitoring programs.
RDR is often discussed alongside CDRN because both are Verifi services that operate before a chargeback is filed. The practical difference is who acts. CDRN routes eligible disputes to the merchant to review and act on, while RDR applies the merchant's own decisioning automatically to eligible cases. Many merchants use them as complementary layers rather than substitutes.
Because RDR resolutions typically involve refunding the cardholder, disciplined merchants treat reconciliation as part of the workflow. An automatic resolution should be recorded against the original transaction so it is not later refunded a second time or misread as an unresolved dispute. Keeping RDR outcomes, refunds, and disputes in one reconciled view is what keeps the automation clean and the merchant account protected.
Why Rapid Dispute Resolution Matters
For merchants carrying meaningful Visa dispute volume, RDR turns eligible disputes into an automated resolution step instead of a manual firefight. When a qualifying dispute is intercepted before it becomes a formal chargeback, the merchant avoids the chargeback fee, keeps the dispute out of ratio-driven monitoring counts, and protects the merchant account from avoidable pressure.
Because the service acts inside the pre-dispute window, it lets operators define once — through rules — how they want eligible cases handled, rather than reviewing each notification by hand. That consistency is what makes RDR valuable at scale, particularly for card-not-present and subscription businesses where dispute volume is steady and predictable.
How Rapid Dispute Resolution Is Used in Payments
A merchant enrolls through its acquirer or provider and configures decisioning rules — for example, resolving eligible disputes automatically below a defined transaction amount. When an eligible Visa dispute is raised, RDR evaluates it against those rules and can resolve the case, typically by refunding the cardholder, before a chargeback is initiated.
Merchants pair RDR with clean transaction records and reconciled refund data so that automated resolutions are tracked, funds movement is accurate, and the outcomes feed a single view of dispute activity rather than being scattered across separate systems.
Important Distinctions
RDR is a Visa pre-dispute service and is not identical to CDRN. CDRN delivers eligible disputes to merchants for review and merchant action, while RDR can apply merchant-defined rules to resolve qualifying disputes automatically. Eligibility, coverage, and behavior depend on participating issuers, merchant enrollment, case eligibility, geography, and current Verifi rules, and RDR does not replace strong prevention, accurate billing descriptors, or well-prepared representment for the disputes it does not resolve.
